SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Dorothye Quaye Chapman Reed Collection includes scrapbooks, correspondence,
awards, certificates, newspaper clippings, writings, photographs, print material, and other
materials related to Dorothye Quaye Chapman Reed’s life and career.

BIOGRAPHICAL / HISTORICAL NOTE
Dorothye Quaye Chapman Reed graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1974
and subsequently served as a University of Mississippi Admissions Counselor until 1977.
She served as the Assistant Director of East Tennessee State University from 1977 to
1981, a Dow Jones & Company, Incorporated sales representative from 1982 to 1996,
founded a private consulting firm in 1992, and beginning in 1996, the Manager of Dodge
Editorial, a part of The McGraw-Hill Companies, Incorporated. Reed received
recognition for raising African American student enrollment at the University of
Mississippi, helped found the Black Student Affairs organization at East Tennessee State
University, and has worked to promote African American women’s history—including
with her book Outstanding Black Women of Yalobusha County: Their stories and their
contributions to a Mississippi Community and the “Outstanding Black Women of
Yalobusha County” project. In addition, she contributed numerous articles to the North
Mississippi Herald, many of which can also be found on her website “Black Women of
Yalobusha County.” In addition, she was an organizer, participant, and collaborates on
the “Black Families of Yalobusha County,” oral history project with the University of
Mississippi. She has received recognition in all of her professional endeavors.

State University. Reed was one of the first African American members of the
University of Mississippi’s football team, along with Ben Williams.
1.8 [1975]. Page featuring two newspaper clippings. Scope note: Contains a
newspaper clipping and photograph of Ben Williams reading, “Ben
Williams…Not Just Another Pretty Face.” In addition, the scrapbook page
features a newspaper story entitled, “Gentle Ben Readies for Bengals” [dated
October 30, 1975]. The newspaper clipping features comments by Ben Williams,
one of the first African American football players at the University of Mississippi,
about an upcoming game with Louisiana State University.

three articles about University of Mississippi student, Ben Williams. The first
entitled, “Rebel Ben Williams Receives All-American Honorable Mention,”
covers Williams’ award by the 1975 United Press International All-America
college football team. The second newspaper clipping entitled, “Reb Gentle Ben
Receives UPI Defenseman Award,” is about Williams being awarded the United
Press International southeast defensive player of the week, during a football game
with the University of Tennessee. The third article entitled, “Biggs, Williams
Receive Honors,” covers the election of Ben Williams as the University’s first
African American Colonel Rebel award.

Delayed,” covers the campus election for Miss Ole Miss and Colonel Reb. A

Children,” covers the sponsorship of a Christmas party for elementary school
students by the University of Mississippi’s Black Student Union.

player Michael Sweet. The first entitled, “Sweet, Cooper Plot Strategy,” featured
Head Coach Ken Cooper and Michael Sweet during a game against the University
of Tennessee. The second clipping is entitled, “Sweet Turns Around End for Long
Yardage” and the final clipping is entitled, “Sweet Finds Daylight, Touchdown in
Fourth Quarter.”

featuring an article entitled, “OM Artist Known for Surrealism.” The article is
about the artwork of Phillip Dotson, a graduate student at the University of
Mississippi. Dotson was having a one-man show at the University Museum that
year. Dotson would continue his art and later become a professor at LeMoyneOwen College.

featuring an article entitled, “OM Artist Portrays Black Experience on Canvas.”
The article is about the artwork of then graduate art student, Lawrence A. Jones.
Jones established a fine arts program at Jackson State University, as well as other
academic institutions.

featuring an article entitled, “Actwood-Ole Miss ‘Old Man.’” The article is about
University of Mississippi basketball player, Walter Actwood.

entitled, “Reb Cagers Demolish Indiana St.” and features an image of player,
Walter Actwood. The second clipping is entitled, “Two-Letterman Walter

featuring two articles. The first is entitled, “Long Route Player to Prof,” and
features the story of Bill Taylor. Taylor, a former Pittsburg Steeler, was then a
professor of Social Work at the University of Mississippi. The second article
entitled, “1975-1976 Members,” features the membership of the “Angel Flight.”

featuring two articles. The first, entitled, “Miss Balfour To Attend Meeting,”
covers the selection of Dorothy Jean Balfour as representative of the University of
Mississippi on the Butterick College Fashion Board. The second article, entitled,
“Ambassadors,” covers the University of Mississippi students chosen to serve in
the New Ole Miss Ambassadors Program. The ambassadors visited high schools
in the state and region, for recruitment purposes.

is about the award of the title of “Miss Ebony 1977” to Carlin Avery Jackson. The
second article is entitled, “African Libraries,” and covers the visit of Dorothy
Keys Johnson, then academic head of the Library Media Technology Program at
Cuyahoga College, to the University of Mississippi. Note: The name of Valerie
Henderson of Meridian is underlined. The third article is entitled, “Science
Leader,” and features Sterling L. Smith, assistant professor of Biology, interacting
with University of Mississippi students, Lynne Hudspeth and Rose Jackson.

May 27 Wedding,” and is about the marriage ceremony for Bonita Kaye
Thompson and Fernando Carlos Harvey. The second article covers the death of
Harold Johnson Hall, due to an automobile accident. The third article is entitled,


“Embalming Board Appointment,” and covers the appointment of Nathan
Hodges, Jr. by Governor Bill Waller to the Mississippi Embalming Board.

Urban Renewal Project’s site office construction. The second article is entitled,
“Students Claim Refused Right to Register,” and is about a suit filed in Federal
District Court by students at Rust College and the Mississippi Industrial Institute
regarding stringent and unlawful rules for voting registration in Marshall County,
Mississippi. The third article is entitled, “Oxford Busing Hearing Set October 24,”
and is about a motion then before the Federal District Court, to require the Oxford
school system to provide free transportation to elementary students who live more
than one and one-half miles from their school.
1.22 Undated. Page featuring three newspaper clippings. Scope note: A scrapbook
page featuring three newspaper clippings. The first, entitled, “Keady Postpones
Hearing on School Busing Motion Due to Death in Family.” The second article is
entitled, “Court Asked to Reconsider,” and is about a request then before the
Mississippi Supreme Court to reconsider its decision to uphold the manslaughter
conviction of Wesley Parks in the May 25, 1971 slaying of Jo Ethel Collier, from
Drew, Mississippi. Collier’s death sparked protests in and around Drew,
Mississippi and civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer, and the Mississippi
NAACP leadership, spoke out against this attack and called upon President Nixon
for aid, which was not forthcoming. The third article is entitled, “Judge Keady
Refuses to Order Additional Busing in Oxford.”

featuring two newspaper clippings. The first, entitled, “What Does ‘Black’ Mean
Now?” is about the Los Angeles mayoral race between Sam Yorty and Tom
Bradley. The second entitled, “Why Did Blacks Protest During Olympics,” is
about the 1968 protest by African American athletes during the Mexico City
Olympic games.

page featuring three newspaper clippings. The first, entitled, “Waller Defends
Clemency In Killer’s Work Release,” is about the release of a convicted Ku Klux
Klan murderer, Charles Clifford Wilson. Wilson was convicted of the murder of
civil rights leader, Vernon Dahmer and initially sentenced to life in Parchman
penitentiary. The second article is entitled, “Ironic Opportunity in the South,” and
is about race relations in the Northern and Southern U.S. The third article is
entitled, “Court to Decide Textbook Question,” and is about a Supreme Court
hearing regarding the constitutionality of the state of Mississippi supplying
textbooks to private white academies.
